10 Snow Day Activities To Try At Home

Need some ideas to keep little hands busy during the polar vortex? We've got you covered!

1. Bake some yummy treats--it's no secret that baking has a dual purpose. Heating the house, and providing delicious baked goods with the added benefit of practicing math through counting and measuring!

2. Build a cozy fort. Blankets, pillows and Christmas lights are a must!

3. Read books! Lots and lots of books. 4. Play games. Easy board games, or even made-up games like hide the {insert child's favorite toy}.

5. Fold Laundry. No, we're serious. It's warm, cozy, and your kids will love getting to practice helping you around the house. Pssst. You can make a towel folding competition that will have your kids eager to fold.

6. Experiment with snow and ice. Although it may be too cold to play outside, we can still bring snow inside to experiment with! Have your child make a hypothesis about snow or ice...Bring some snow in and test it. My kids hypothesized that snow would melt in hot water...so we tried it! Any question your child may have about snow is a great place to start.

7. Blow ice bubbles. Don't stay out too long, but blow some bubbles outside and watch your kids marvel at how quickly the bubbles freeze.

8. Make snow paint. Put paint in a jar and have a bowl of snow ready. Let you child mix the snow in the paint and paint pictures with the snow paint they make. Have you child explore the many shades of color by adding more or less snow to each jar. Ask your child lots of questions and encourage them to explore the new medium.

9. Paint snow. This one is best to do outside...but can be done inside by filling a cookie sheet with snow. Fill empty spray bottles with about a spoonful of paint (or food coloring). Fill the rest of the bottle with water. Let you child use the "spray paint" to spray the snow.

10. Have an indoor picnic. Probably our favorite way to beat the winter blues. Maybe you can picnic in your new blanket fort?
